'The Overlay Mosaic Crochet Starter Guide'** This mosaic crochet starter guide e-book walks you through the basics from how to read a pattern to creating your first mosaic sample! **ENDLESS SUMMER MOSAIC WALL HANGING** This pattern was designed to accompany my presentation on Colour Theory In Mosaic Crochet “Mosaic Crochet- Colour Theory Into Practise” as part of the Mosaic Crochet Summit Hosted By Erin Toews from Juniper & Oakes. I wanted this design to incorporate aspects of colour theory and try to create a painterly effect inspired by the way the pointillist and impressionist painters approached colour’ with dabs of pure colour that blend in the eye. So I have played with and bent the rules of mosaic crochet a little bit in order to achieve that goal! But don't worry the pattern comes with a special cheat sheet explaining how to read the pattern chart. It also comes with full colour chart and written instructions. and photo tutorial showing how to attach the dowel rod and make the tassels **YARN & EQUIPMENT REQUIRED** **YARN** I used Stylecraft Special DK 100% acrylic (100g = 295m/323yds) Total required approx 120g (360-370m / 390-400yds) split across 6 colours as follows: RED - Approx 15g (45m/48yds) - Col 1010 Matador ORANGE - Approx 25g (74m/80yds)- Col 1256 Jaffa YELLOW - Approx 10g (29.5m/32yds) - Col 1114 Sunshine BLUE - Approx 20g (59m/64yds)- Col 1829 Empire BLACK - Approx 40g (118m/128yds)- Col 1002 Black VIOLET - Approx 10g (29.5m/32yds)- Col 1425 Emperor **Yarn Substitution:** Any yarn could be used however please note that changing yarn weight will require a diierent sized hook (see recommended size on yarn ball band) and result in a change in finished size. **HOOK SIZE** = 4MM (US G/6 UK8 **OTHER MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT** SCISSORS STITCHMARKERS YARN DARNING NEEDLE 13 INCH /33CM LONG 6MM WOODEN DOWEL **SPECIAL STITCHES** This pattern is worked using the standard BLOsc, and FLOdc (worked into the remaining FLO, 2 rows below) mosaic crochet stitches apart from a small number of FLOtr stitches that form the trunk of the Palm tree in the lower section of the pattern. These FLOtr stitches should be worked into the remaining FLO 3 rows below. **ABBREVIATIONS U.S. TERMS** sc - Single crochet FLOdc - front Loop Only double crochet FLOtr - Front Loop Only treble crochet BLOsc - Back Loop Only single crochet ch - Chain slst - Slip stitch dec - Decrease inc - Increase st/s - Stitch/es yrh - Yarn round hook BLO - Back loop/s only FLO - Front loop/s only R - Row RS - Right side WS - Wrong side F.O. - Fasten Off **UK EQUIVALENT TERMS** = dc - UK double crochet = FLOtr - UK front Loop Only treble crochet = FLOdtr - UK Front Loop Only double treble = BLOdc - UK Back Loop Only double crochet **GAUGE** =21st X 20r = 4 inches//10cm approx using DK acrylic yarn **FINISHED SIZE NOT INCLUDING TASSELS** Approx 11.5 x 14 inches /29 x 36cm **TASSELS** = Approx 5 inches / 13cm in length **PATTERN NOTES** This pattern is an overlay mosaic crochet pattern, worked using, BLOsc, FLOdc and FLOdtr. The pattern is worked in sc and BLO for all stitches except the 'overlay' stitches which are worked in the FLO into the stitch 2 rows below, or in the 3rd row below for the FLOtr stitches, thus covering over the stripe of the alternative coloured row in those sections. Each colour is joined at the beginning and fastened at the end of each row which forms side ‘fringes’ which can be woven in, encased in an envelope border or left as required. In this pattern, the yarn ends have been woven in. **HINT** - to save on weaving in ends you can crochet over the yarn tails at the beginning of the rows on the right hand side. The edge stitches are worked in sc in both loops. **COLOUR CHANGES** This pattern differs from the standard mosaic crochet pattern in that the colour changes do not follow the usual alternate row colour changes. Instead change colours as indicated by the end stitches and work any FLOdc into the remaining FLO in 2nd row below as normal, irrespective of the colour of that loop. So, for example, a Violet FLOdc might be worked into a remaining Red FLO in the 2nd row below. Any squares without special symbols are worked as BLOsc in the colour indicated by the Row Colour indicator, irrespective of the colour of that square. I wanted this piece to evoke the way the intense heat of the day starts to cool as the sun goes down, with the sun reflecting and refracting on the surface of the water. The use of the colour stripes in the tassels almost bleeding into each other accentuate the the idea of the sun melting into the sea.
