This means the finished hat will be about 10 cm [4 in] smaller than your actual head circumference. Sizes 1 (2) 3 are designed to fit a head circumference of 54–56 (56–58) 58–60 cm [21¼–22 (22–22¾) 22¾–23½ in]. Before you begin, measure your head to determine the correct size. For example, if your head circumference is 57 cm [22½ in], you should knit size 2. Single strand: Use one strand of 100% wool or a wool blend with approx. 120–130 m [131–142 yds] per 50 g to achieve the same gauge. Cashmere options can be slightly finer, around 140–150 m [153–164 yds] per 50 g. Double strand: Combine one strand of DK-weight wool (175–200 m / 191–219 yds per 50 g) with a lace-weight yarn (200–300 m / 219–328 yds per 25 g) such as silk mohair or alpaca to reach the same worsted-weight thickness. **Needles:** Circular needles: 3 mm [US 2½] 40 cm [16 in]. 3.5 mm [US 4] 40 cm [16 in].
