Weldon's Wanzer Border

This border from *Weldon’s Practical Needlework*, vol. 5, p.11 is broad with a 30-row repeat. 30 rows are a lot but the pattern is repetitive and predictable. (It’s not that hard.) It starts with 26 stitches, increases slowly to 34 stitches and returns to 26 stitches for the next repeat. I changed the area next to the header from garter stitch to stockinette stitch for more textural interest. Wanzer is a village in Germany and also a surname. The swatch is 3.5 inches at its deepest at gauge. The motifs are about 3 inches across at their widest. I recommend blocking moderately horizontally but aggressively vertically to show the lace in the motifs. Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, k3tog and bind off. Gauge is **not** important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance. 53 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 26-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
