You know those skeins of laceweight you’ve been saving—too special; too fine for socks, and maybe you're not feeling another shawl? The Unwind Tee was made for those. Designed to be knit at a relaxed gauge with airy baby suri silk or any drapey laceweight, it transforms that precious skein into something simple, wearable, and unforgettable. No purling required—just rows of meditative garter stitch that twist gently around a visible back seam, like the line in vintage stockings. The silhouette is clean and a little tailored, with a trim yoke and a soft, floaty drape. It’s slow knitting in the best way—quiet, confident, and full of character.
**YARN**
La Bien Aimee’s Little Kumo, lace weight (65% Baby Suri, 35% Silk) 437 yards (400 meters) / 50 grams.
Colorway used for sample: “Howl & Sophie” (neon speckled).
2 (2, 2, 3, 3) (3, 3, 3, 3) skeins.
**OR** Approximately 717 (770, 830, 895, 985) (1040, 1120, 1205, 1295) yards / 656 (704, 759, 818, 900) (951, 1024, 1102, 1184) meters of Lace Weight Yarn
Note: These yarn amounts are estimates. Any changes that knitters make to gauge or the sweater’s measurements will change the amount of yarn you’ll need.
**GAUGE**
22 stitches and 40 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in garter stitch, worked in the round on gauge needles, after blocking (see page 7).
Note: Because this tee is worked in the round using garter stitch and short rows, a visible seam will form where the rounds begin and the wrap and turns occur. Before beginning the full project, knitters are encouraged to swatch both in the round and using the same no purl garter method to better understand how the seam will appear in your fabric. While some visibility is expected, swatching can help you find a tension that feels best to you.
**NEEDLES***
You’ll need two sizes of circular needles in several lengths. First, knit a gauge swatch to determine the size needle that you need for the main body of the sweater. You’ll use a needle one size smaller for the ribbed neckband and hem. For the sample, I used:
US Size 5 / 3.75 mm 16” / 40 cm circular needle for the ribbed neckband and a magic loop needle for the ribbed sleeve cuffs.
US Size 6 / 4 mm circular needle, 16” / 40 cm length for the sweater just below the neckband and 32” / 60 cm length for the body.
*Always choose the needle size that you need in order to obtain the pattern’s gauge.
**TECHNIQUES USED**
Long Tail Cast On Method
German Short Rows
Double Stitch
Knitting in the Round on a Circular Needle
Right Leaning Lifted Increase
Magic Loop Method
No Purl Garter in the Round
**CONSTRUCTION NOTES**
This tee is knit top down in garter stitch in the round using a technique that eliminates purling. Short rows are worked after the yoke to raise the back neckline. Sleeves and body are divided at the underarm, and the body is worked straight to the hem. Sleeves are finished with a ribbed cuff. Neckline, hem, and sleeve edges are all trimmed in 1x1 ribbing.
