The Return of Hat January: Hooded Cowl

This cowl combines plush garter stitch and brioche ribbing for a cozy, thick hood/neckwarmer. Ribbing and garter stitch make a great angular combination, and you can choose between a more practical hood (more fitted, slightly warmer) and something closer to a full-on ridiculous fantasy hood silhouette, useful if you’re hanging around looking sinister in the shadowy corners of a tavern. (It also has functional buttons.) **Materials:** * 270-370 yards of worsted wool yarn (shown in Patons Classic Wool, but you may want a softer option) * 1 24" circular needle in US5-7/3.75-4.5mm, or size needed for gauge. * Tapestry needle * removable stitch markers * three 6/8-7/8" buttons * optional: needle and thread if buttons are not suited to yarn and tapestry needle **Gauge:** Gauge is 17 sts and 28 rows over 4"/10cm of lightly blocked garter stitch, worked flat. Please be sure to check your gauge. **Measurements:** The finished hood measures 15"/38cm tall and is about 22"/56cm circumference at the cowl. The smaller hood is roomy but more fitted. The larger version (19"/48cm tall, same dimensions otherwise) is worth knitting if you want more of a dramatic fantasy effect, but isn’t warmer.
