The Sawtooth Mittens were inspired by wanting to make a quilt but not having the time or the desire to cut out hundreds of tiny triangles. Leftover yarn from a new sweater was handy, and the Sawtooth Mittens basically knit themselves. These mittens feature a quilt-inspired star on the back of the hand and a simple pattern on the palm. A smaller version of the quilt star is worked on the thumb gusset before moving to simpler and easier-to-work stripes of colorwork up the thumb. Long ribbed cuffs nestle under the cuff of your coat to make sure your hands are free from cold drafts.
Given the size of the motif used, the normal method of grading where you add or remove repeats was not an option. Sizing is accomplished by using different yarn weights for the different sizes. Small uses DK weight yarn, medium (the sample size) uses worsted weight yarn, and large uses bulky weight yarn.
SIZES
Adult (S, M, L)
Note: Sizing is accomplished by using a different weight yarn to produce a different size mitten. All three sizes have identical stitch counts and use the same charts.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Hand circumference: (8, 9, 10) inches / (20, 22.5, 25) cm
Hand length (6.5, 8, 9.25) inches / (16.5, 20, 23) cm
Hand length does not include the ribbed cuff.
Measure the recipient’s hand length from wrist to fingertip and choose the size closest to or slightly larger than that measurement. Stranded knitting will not stretch very much.
YARN
130 yards / 119 meters MC,
60 yards / 55 meters CC yarn.
Small uses DK weight yarn.
Medium uses worsted weight yarn.
Large uses bulky weight yarn.
Note: Yardage estimates include the yarn necessary to knit both mittens.
The sample is size Medium and uses Harrisville Designs Highland in the colors Cypress (MC) and Silver Mist (CC).
