The Hygge slippers are a very quick and easy make, perfect for beginners and a beautiful gift for the holidays.
I’ve actually been making these slippers since before the boys were born, so close to 20 years! But back then I would knit them. I feel that the best gifts for our loved ones are woolly warm wearables like these and the year I learned how to make these, I made a pair for just about everyone for Christmas. I’m thinking it’s time for another holiday season with wooly slippers for everyone I love!
These are so great to make, because you can make a pair or two easily in just one night, they’re great for using up scraps of wool too and if you like you can add some extra details like embroidery finish, leather soles or felting the slippers. such fun!
When I published my first Crochet book back in 2011, I translated these slippers from knit to crochet and have made countless pairs since. I sure hope you join me in making the world a little bit more cozy, or hygge like we say in the Nordic countries, and make these comfy warm slippers for both yourself and the people around you. This way we will all be snug and warm this coming winter.
**Sizes**
The slippers come 3 sizes. We have SMALL MEDIUM and LARGE both for the width and length. You can then combine it as you please and do for example a pair of slippers that is medium width and large long.
The original pattern was in bulky weight yarn and works for adults, approximately EURO sizes
34-36 (38-40) 41-43
You can work these slippers in any yarn you like and following are the approximate length you will get for each of the three sizes in Bulky, Aran and DK, according to the gauge given here.
BULKY
SMALL 20 cm 7.874’’
MEDIUM 24 cm 9.449’’
LARGE 27.5 cm 10.826’’
ARAN
SMALL 15 cm 5.905’’
MEDIUM 18 cm 7.086’’
LARGE 20.5 cm 8.070’’
DK
SMALL 13 cm 5.118’’
MEDIUM 16 cm 6.299’’
LARGE 18 cm 7.086’’
As you can see in the table above, it’s ideal to use DK or Aran yarn and make kiddie size slippers. Like I explain in the pattern, it’s very easy to make the slippers a bit longer or shorter and you can use the shoe size table at the end of the pattern for guidance on how to make the size you want with the yarn weight and gauge you are using. For the width of the slippers you can always then choose the small, medium or large.
**Gauge in bulky with 6.5 mm hook**
12 rows & 12 ST in SC = 10 cm
**Gauge in Aran with 5 mm hook**
16 rows & 16 ST in SC = 10 cm
**Gauge in DK with 4.5 mm hook**
18 rows & 18 ST in SC = 10 cm
**Abbreviations (US terms)**
ST = stitch/stitches
CH = chain stitch
SS = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
SC 2tog = work 2 SCs together
**Yarn**
You can use any Bulky weight yarn for the original adult size HYGGE slippers. I used what I could source locally, some Icelandic wool of course, both of the following or something similar will do nicely:
Alafoss lopi from Istex, 100% Icelandic wool, 100 g = 100 m.
Double Saga Wool from Icewear, 100% wool, 100 g = 100 m.
For all sizes in medium width, 2 x 100 g skeins of bulky wool for the pair.
Double stranded ploppy (plotulopi from Istex) will work too
For smaller sizes you can use for example DK or Aran weight yarn, as is included in yarn stats and gauge here.
These slippers are a perfect stash buster too, so before buying yarn you can raid your stash and even use up some of your scrap yarn if you go for multi-coloured slippers, it’s easy enough to do them striped! and if you don't have any bulky weight yarn, you can make some with your stash by holding a few threads together!
**Hooks**
If using bulky yarn for the adult slippers, then use a 6.5 mm hook.
If using aran weight yarn for kiddie slippers, then use a 5 mm hook.
If using DK yarn for the kiddie slippers, then use a 4 or 4.5 mm hook.
Otherwise use a hook that suits your yarn.
**General instructions & colours**
We start by making the heel piece, you can make both at the start, best to just get those out of the way and thus get a head start on our second slipper. Then we work the slipper straight on to the heel piece, first we work back and forth and then we join into a circle and continue working straight. Finally, we do a decrease and close the slipper up at the toes. For a nice finish we then work one round of SCs over the opening.
If you like, you can do the slippers one size up and then felt them by throwing them in the washing machine with some towels or a pair of jeans. This only works if you are using wool of course, I give further instructions on this in the video. I like sewing some leather under the slippers and show you that in the video as well.
Finally, you can decorate your Hygge slippers by adding a little cross stitching detail. I include a few motifs for that at the end of the pattern and will do a video for that next.
