Just in time for you to open that yarn countdown or advent box of minis, allow me to introduce the Moontower shawl. An invitation to color with your yarn, Moontower is available in two sizes. You can choose to knit a smaller neckerchief or a larger shawl. No minis? No problem! Moontower is equally beautiful and fun to knit with a single skein of color shifting yarn. Did someone say “handspun”? I am thrilled with how my larger sample of Moontower knit up with one skein of fingering weight from my handspun stash for the contrast color and two skeins of fingering weight hand dyed yarn from Julie Asselin for the main color. My smaller sample uses five colors from mini skeins for the contrast colors and one skein of fingering weight for the main color, all from Julie Asselin. Moontower is a versatile pattern that allows you to create your own masterpiece with assorted color options ensuring that your shawl is completely unique. For ease of reading the pattern, instructions are both charted and written. **Techniques Used In This Pattern** Slipped stitches, increasing, I-Cord edge, I-Cord bind off **Finished Measurements** Moontower is written for two sizes. Instructions for each size are listed as “Small (Large)”. This pattern is flexible, you can add repeats to the shawl body as your yardage allows. **Wingspan**: 53.25 (63)” / 135.5 (160) cm **Depth**: 20.5 (26)” / 52 (66) cm **Needles** US 5 / 3.75 mm or needle used to to get gauge, 24” circular or longer **Notions** Tapestry needle to weave in ends, tools for wet blocking **Gauge** 19 sts and 32 rows = 4” / 10 cm in ‘Garter Ridge Repeat’ (found on pg 4), knit flat, after blocking. Exact gauge is not important, but will affect yardage and finished size. **Helpful Tutorial** [Weave in ends as you work][1] **Yarn** Main Color Shown in small sample Julie Asselin ‘Leizu Fingering’, (90% Merino, 10% Silk, 420 yds / 370 m per 115 g) Shown in color ‘Asteroide’ Shown in large sample Julie Asselin ‘Fino’, (75% Merino / 15% Cashmere / 10% Silk, 400 yds / 370 m per 115 g) Shown in color ‘Midnight Oil’ One skein (two skeins) or 420 (640) yds / 370 (590) m or a similar fingering weight yarn Contrast Color(s) Option A, shown in small sample: For the mosaic sections, use five colors in a sequence as shown or select more than five colors in any arrangement you like. This is a great project to get creative with minis! CC1: 35 (40) yds / 32 (37) m CC2: 35 (40) yds / 32 (37) m CC3: 35 (40) yds / 32 (37) m CC4: 35 (40) yds / 32 (37) m CC5: 35 (40) yds / 32 (37) m Option B, shown in larger sample: Use a single skein of yarn. Color shifting yarns are a great option for this shawl. My sample is shown with handspun fingering weight yarn for the contrast color.
