Experienced: unusual construction, intarsia
Color shifts are accomplished by casting on using three balls of yarn that have been started at different points in the color sequence.
The pattern does not *specifically* say to use intarsia, but it does say to continue working with the 3 balls of yarn to create a color block effect, and you can see the join points in the images, so it is safe to assume intarsia is the technique being used.
