Basic Childrens Poncho

Experience Level: Beginner This is a tried-and-true basic children’s poncho. The rolled neckline, stockinette body with visible increases on the front and back, and garter stitch border all combine to make a simple project that really lets the yarn you choose shine! The pattern is written for DK, worsted, and chunky weight yarns and can be sized larger or smaller by changing the length you knit the body. For an adult version of this design, check out the [Basic Adult Poncho][2] pattern ***Construction Details*** The Basic Children’s Poncho is worked from the top-down in the round to the desired length. Increases are made every other round using the knit in the front and back technique. ***Techniques Necessary*** Cast on Bind off Join in the round KFB increase ***Finished Measurements*** 18” neck circumference (all sizes), length of 15 (16, 17, 18)” ***Yarn*** DK weight yarn – 550-900 yards Worsted weight yarn – 475-800 yards Chunky weight yarn – 400-700 yards ***Gauge*** DK weight – 20 sts and 28 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch on size 6 needles or size needed to obtain gauge Worsted weight – 16 sts and 25 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch on size 9 needles or size needed to obtain gauge Chunky weight – 14 sts and 20 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch on size 10.5 needles or size needed to obtain gauge ***Needles*** Circular needles in 16”, 24”, and 32” or 40” lengths DK weight – US 6 (4mm) Worsted weight – US 9 (5.5mm) Chunky weight – US 10.5 (6.5mm) Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain correct gauge. ***Other Materials*** Three stitch markers (one of which is a distinguishing style or color) and a tapestry needle.
