The inspiration for this project came from an unfortunate broiler incident. I won’t go into the details, but I needed some new potholders. Felted or unfelted, these potholders double as attractive, tableworthy trivets. This project is a great skill-builder. We've added a few “Bonus Features” to the typical mitered square pattern. In our version, we added a knitted i-cord edging and introduce So, I Make Stuff’s YouTube Video on “How to Weave In your Yarn Ends as you Knit”. Mitered knitting, also referred to as modular or domino knitting, typically produces perfect squares by working a series of double decreases on alternate rows. Self striping yarns like Noro work very well for mitered knitting. This pattern has a knitted i-cord edge on the sides. This helps keep the edges clean and straight. It can also be very practical because it adds structure to the edge of a fabric that might otherwise tend to stretch out and it also keeps a stockinette edge from rolling to the purl side. We’ve used Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Bulky for this project because of this yarn’s yummy wool/mohair blend, the great color choices and the naturally insulating, flame retardant, and moisture resistant properties of the wool. The knitted fabric is fairly dense and does not require a tremendous amount of felting to be an effective potholder. Color changes are not included in the written pattern and were made somewhat randomly on both versions. If you need a quick gift or some instant gratification, this is THE project....Easy, Quick, and something you can use everyday!
