This is the children's version of my [William][1] pattern, from [Stranded Knits][2]. The stranded colourwork design is adapted from the lovely [Brother Rabbit][3] pattern by English ‘Arts and Crafts’ designer, William Morris. The pictured sample was knitted with Rowan Fine Tweed, so the sweater is ideal for cool British summer days, and for any other time of year if worn with warm undergarments. You will need one 25g ball (98 yards/90 metres) of contrast colour in all sizes, and the following number of 25g balls in main colour: 1-2 years - 5 balls (490 yards/450 metres) 2-3 years - 6 balls (588 yards/540 metres) 3-4 years - 7 balls (686 yards/630 metres) 4-5 years - 7 balls (686 yards/630 metres) 5-6 years - 8 balls (784 yards/720 metres) 6-7 years - 9 balls (882 yards/810 metres) 7-8 years - 9 balls (882 yards/810 metres) You will also need 2 buttons of 12mm or ½" size. The sweater is knitted from the top down. It is mostly worked in the round except for the yoke area above the colourwork, which includes button bands for the shoulder fastening. Short row shaping slightly scoops the front neck. Provisional cast-ons are used at the underarm for a comfortably seamless armhole. PDF illustrated tutorials for the provisional cast-on method used in this pattern, and for trapping floats in stranded colourwork, may be found in the tutorials section of [my website][4].
