The [Photography Shawl][6] > pattern is also 25% off! The Hana shawl is a cozy and elegant shawl or wide scarf suitable both for wearing inside when extra warmth is needed, and for country walks. The shawl combines a thick rib of twisted stitches with lace, which is reminiscent of flowers growing in high grass. Inspiration for the lace pattern comes from Japanese stitches, hence the name of the shawl, which means “flower” in Japanese. The pattern is both charted (with RS and WS rows) and written. The pattern includes a photo tutorial for working short rows, and detailed blocking instructions. [Download two preview pages of the pattern for more information.][7] ____________________________ ***Some quotes from the test knitters: *** *"This was probably one of the most fun knits. Very unique construction and well executed pattern."* [ThePandorica](person) *"Don’t be scared of the short rows - they’re very well explained, and even if you’ve never done them before, you shouldn’t be afraid to let this be your first time!"* [ZarahMaria](person) *"… directions are very detailed and specific. I like this in a pattern and if there are people who don’t like this they can choose to ignore them and move right to the knitting."* [jthompson216316](person) The pattern was tech edited by [cmuralidhara](person) and test-knit by 7 knitters to whom I am greatly thankful for helping improve the pattern. ____________________________ **Sizes** If knit in DK weight yarn the shawl will be of M size, worsted weight yarn will result in an L size shawl. Maths are explained in detail, therefore a knitter can easily adjust the size. Approximate measurements of blocked shawls: M size (knit from DK/8 ply): 160 cm (63”) across the top edge, 29 cm (11”) along the center stitch and 19 cm (7”) along the edge stitches. L size (knit from worsted/10 ply): 185 cm (73”) across the top edge, 33 cm (13”) along the center stitch and 23 cm (9”) along the edge stitches. **Gauge ** The gauge is given for 10 cm (4") stockinette square after wet blocking (dry and unpin the swatch before measuring): For M size (DK/8 ply): 15 sts/23 rows For L size (worsted/10 ply): 13 sts/21 rows **Yarn** For the best results choose single-ply or round yarn in solid or semi-solid color. Somewhat dense fabric will show the pattern best. Yarn needs (you may need more or less depending on your tension): For M size (DK/8 ply): 410 m (450 y) For L size (worsted/10 ply): 550 m (600 y) **Notions ** 80 cm (32") or longer circular needles in size to obtain gauge, yarn needle for weaving in the ends, blocking pins, 15 stitch markers (+2 optional stitch markers of different color for marking wrapped stitches). Using sharp-pointed needles is recommended. **Level** Experienced (possibly suitable for adventurous intermediate) ***Techniques used:*** *Short rows* (a photo tutorial is included for a very simple and elegant short rows technique where the work is turned without wrapping the stitch and the yarn is wrapped around the needle instead), *[Fake tubular bind-off][8]* ***Stitches used:*** K, p, yo, k1tbl, p1tbl, k2tog, p2tog, ssk, ssp2tbl, ssp3tbl, s2kp, skp ***Skills:*** Reading charts or written instructions, blocking lace [1]: https://www.ravelry.com/designers/kristina-vilimaite [2]: https://www.ravelry.com/designers/kristina-vilimaite/bundles [3]: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/photography-shawl [4]: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/secession [5]: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/top-5 [6]: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/photography-shawl [7]: http://www.box.net/shared/bspcrloc76zgs6fjdd4m [8]: http://techknitting.blogspot.com/2007/04/easy-fake-tubular-bind-off-casting-off.html
