The Sailor beanie is knitted with two strands of yarn and the brim is folded twice for triple thickness around the ears bringing you extra warmth and coziness during the winter months. Combining a strand of silk-mohair knitted together with a DK weight merino yarn makes the hat really soft and gives it a beautiful halo. You can knit the beanie using the hat also without mohair using just a single strand of worsted weight yarn. If you wish to make the worsted weight version, omit all instructions where it says "hold both yarns together" and work with a single strand instead. You can easily adjust the length of the hat to get the fit you want. The hat is knitted from top down, so you can try it on as you knit it to make sure the length is just perfect for your head. After the crown shaping the rest of the hat is just simple 2x2 ribbing. The Sailor beanie is designed for everyday use, and it knits up surprisingly fast. This is the perfect project to use the precious hand dyed skeins from your stash, as the simple texture really highlights the colors and texture of the yarn! You can either go for a muted look by choosing matching solid colorways for both yarns, get a marled look by choosing different colors for the fingering weight yarn and the mohair, or go for extra speckles by picking both yarns in speckled colorways (either the same colorway or both different). Size To fit head circumference: 53-58.5 cm / 21-23 inches Length with brim unfolded: 44 cm / 17.5 inches (adjustable) Length with brim folded twice (triple thickness): approximately 22 cm / 8.75 inches Yarn Note: The pattern uses a strand of DK weight yarn held together with a strand of lace weight mohair yarn, but they can be substituted for a single strand of worsted weight yarn. If you wish to work a worsted weight version, omit all the instructions where it says “hold the yarns together” and follow only the yarn amount requirements for the DK weight yarn. 300-350 m / 330-385 yards of fingering weight yarn held together with 300-350 m / 330-385 yards of lace weight mohair yarn Navy blue sample: 3 skeins of Sandnes Garn PetiteKnit Double Sunday (100% merino; 118 meters / 129 yards per 50 g) shown in the colorway Sailor in the dark and 2 skeins of Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair (57% kid mohair, 28% silk, 15% wool; 212 m / 232 yards per 25g), shown in colorway 5581 Lilac sample: 2 skeins of Hedgehog Fibres Tweedy (50% Falkland Merino Wool, 37.5% Recycled Wool, 12.5% HHF Thread Waste, 230 m / 252 yards per 100 g), shown in colorway Lullaby and 2 skeins of Mohair by Canard Brushed Lace (72% kid mohair, 28% mulberry silk; 210 m / 229 yards per 25g), colorway 3038.
