SKILL LEVEL:
Adventurous Beginner: For those crocheters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations.
I have long admired quilters and their dedication to their craft. The many hours required to choose just the right fabrics, hand cut the various pieces, assemble them precisely, and then work the countless little stitches to finish it all off truly amazes me. What a testament of love for what they do, as well as for the lucky recipient of their art.
The design of this blanket is loosely based on a well-known quilt pattern. By breaking it down into 12 manageable sections, you will be able to create your own treasure. Use the warm color palette chosen for this Mystery CAL to invoke visions of curling up hearthside in front of a crackling fire with loved ones.
* To watch a video about Clue #12, click [here][10]. (Additional MCAL videos are available on our [YouTube channel][11]).
* The blanket begins with a center
square motif, and then radiates outward.
The final layout is similar to a Log
Cabin quilt design with a bit of a
twist.
* Throughout the pattern, the first
stitch refers to the same one as the
base of the starting chain, unless
otherwise explicitly stated otherwise.
* It is extremely helpful to place a
removable stitch marker on the right
side of your work, so that you can
easily determine where to begin
subsequent sections. You may also find
it helpful to add a marker to denote
the first stitch of each round for
Section 1. It helps to indicate where
the repeats stop, and it helps show
the top of turning chains to work into
them later.
* Making a gauge swatch is critical to
achieve the desired results. I used to
think that I “always worked to gauge.”
However, it finally dawned on me that
what I was really assuming was that I
worked to the same gauge as the person
who designed the pattern. Believe me,
that is a bad assumption. Please DO
NOT assume that you crochet to the
same gauge as I do! I have learned
that I tend to crochet on the "tight"
end of the spectrum, so do not be
surprised if you need to go down a
hook size (or 2!). Yes, it is an extra
step, but it also assures you that
what you are crocheting will produce
what you expect. And you won’t need to
worry about running out of yarn.
* If you are substituting yarn, it is
especially important to verify that it
behaves in the same way as the yarn
called for in the pattern. If you are
using a substitute yarn, be sure that
it is mostly natural fibers. You need
to be able to block the blanket to get
the straightest possible edges.
Man-made fibers typically do not block
well and will shrink back to the
as-knit shape.

"Once upon a time there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood. Far from it. Just a common block of firewood, one of those thick, solid logs that are put on the fire in winter to make cold rooms cozy and warm.” -Carlo Collodi
