Echoes of the Night

Echoes of the Night is a cuff-down sock pattern inspired by Gothic aesthetics and New Wave. The stranded colorwork features flying and hanging bats, connected by their ultrasonic calls as they communicate through the night. This is my first original sock design, created after knitting many pairs of socks and exploring different colorwork techniques. I wanted the pattern to feel dark, slightly playful, and unmistakably my own. The socks are worked in the round from the cuff to the toe. The cuff is worked in twisted 1 × 1 ribbing, followed by stranded colorwork on the leg and foot. The heel is worked using German short rows, while the toe is shaped with decreases and closed by pulling the yarn through the remaining stitches. The pattern includes **two sizes: 64 stitches (S–M) and 72 stitches (M–L)**. The sizes are designed to accommodate a foot circumference of approximately **21–23.5 cm (8.3–9.3 in)** and **23–25.5 cm (9.1–10 in)** respectively, with negative ease for a close and comfortable fit. The colorwork can be worked on the leg and repeated near the beginning of the toe, or, if desired, continued across the foot for a more striking look. **Materials** * 4-ply / fingering-weight sock yarn in two contrasting colors * Approximately **250 m / 275 yd of main color** * Approximately **150 m / 165 yd of contrast color** * 2.0 mm (US 0) needles for the ribbing * 2.5 mm (US 1.5) needles for the rest of the sock * Optional: 4.0 mm (US 6) needle for casting on * Double-pointed needles, CraSyTrio needles, Magic Loop, or a small circular needle, depending on your preference * Stitch marker * Tapestry needle * Scissors * Measuring tape Yarn quantities are approximate and may vary depending on individual tension, size, and whether the colorwork is continued across the foot. **Gauge** **19 stitches × 20 rounds = 5 × 5 cm (2 × 2 in)** in stranded colorwork, measured **after washing and drying**. The colorwork should be firm enough to hold its shape while still allowing the fabric to stretch comfortably around the foot. Keep the floats relaxed and avoid pulling them too tightly across the back of the work.
