The Multiplicity Socks were designed for the Supersock World Championship 2026 and made their debut in the Qualifier. The pattern is currently exclusive to SWC26 knitters. This pattern will be available for purchase to the general public following the completion of the Qualifier for the competition in early June. DESIGN INSPIRATION When organic chemists synthesize a new molecule, they have to be certain that they’ve accurately determined the structure of the molecule, in both its two-dimensional and three-dimensional arrangements. To help determine which atom is connected to which other atom via a molecular bond, we use a technique called Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, which results in a spectrum (or 2-D graph) that details electronic interactions between neighboring hydrogen atoms. While to most eyes this looks like a squiggly line on a page, to me and my colleagues, it is just a puzzle to solve as part of our structural elucidation process. One key element of the Proton NMR spectrum is that protons (or hydrogen atoms with no electrons) will cause the signals of other neighboring protons to split into multiple peaks. The splitting pattern that we see helps us to determine how many and which other protons in the molecule are nearby. We refer to the observed splitting patterns as the “multiplicity” of the protons, and in certain cases, the splitting patterns follow what’s known as Pascal’s Triangle in terms of the number of peaks and the distances between the peaks. The Multiplicity Socks are inspired by my experiences in structural elucidation and solving NMR problems and are designed to resemble these splitting patterns. I started with a 2x2 rib that transitions into a garter-rib texture, with stockinette columns that split and recombine to form hexagons arranged in the shape of Pascal’s Triangle. I added a little bit of lace detail to embed smaller triangles into each hexagon. I loved the puzzle-solving aspect of designing these socks so that each piece of the sock would be interchangeable and would result in multiple possible sock appearances. In this pattern, I will guide you through the arrangements of the charts to reach each individual appearance. While there are only a handful of charts for each sock size, there are eight possible combinations, and you can mix and match your socks to make mirrored socks, identical socks, or fraternal socks! The good news is that all of the socks start out with the same leg chart, so you don’t have to make any choices until after you’ve finished the leg. CONSTRUCTION The Multiplicity Socks are knit cuff-down, beginning with a 2x2 rib and garter-rib texture. The leg of the sock features an elegant no-purl cable and lace design that stacks hexagons and triangles in a Pascal’s Triangle arrangement. A modified Strong heel re-incorporates the garter-rib texture and allows the motifs to flow seamlessly through the gusset and into the foot and toe of the sock while also providing a fantastic fit. Kitchener stitch is used to finish off the sock. PATTERN INFORMATION *Difficulty Rating* INTERMEDIATE: Project is worked in the round from the cuff down and includes cables, lace, slipped stitches, increases, and decreases. Kitchener stitch is used to finish off the toe. The pattern is primarily charted. *Recommended Yarn* Sock by Teal Torch Knits, 75% superwash merino wool/25% nylon, 463 yds (423 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g): 1 skein (shown in Neon Melon) OR approximately 400 yds (366 m) light fingering to fingering weight yarn. This pattern will play best with any fingering weight wool/wool blend yarn in solid, tonal, lightly speckled, or low-contrast colorways. *Needles/Notions* * US #1 (2.25 mm) 32-40” (80-100 cm) circular, or five double-pointed needles; OR size needed to obtain gauge. * Tapestry needle for Kitchener stitch and weaving in ends. * 2 stitch markers. * Cable needle. *Gauge* 36 sts and 48 rnds to 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on US #1 (2.25 mm) needles. Pattern gauge was measured after washing and blocking. *Sizes Available* 48 {56, 64, **72**, **80**} sts *Finished Measurements* 5.25 {6.25, 7, **8**, **9**}” (13.5 {15.8, 18, **20.3**, **22.6**} cm) leg and foot circumference, unstretched. Recommended fit is 0.5-1.5” (1-3.8 cm) negative ease. The model has a ball of foot measurement of 8.5” (21.5 cm) and leg measurement of 8.5” (21.5 cm) and is wearing a 64 sts sample. The model typically wears 64-st vanilla socks. To get the best fit, choose the size with the CO stitch count closest to what you would CO for vanilla socks using your preferred needle size and sock yarn. [1]: https://technicolormom.com/
