**This started as a mystery hat knit-a-long May 15th – June 5th on my patreon—now you can get the finished pattern over there, along with [all these other patterns][1]!!**
-----
A 2x2 ribbed hat is turned on its side for this multi-directional design. Start with a sideways brim, which grows slowly taller from beginning to end, stitches made along the top for later. Then work short rows over those top stitches, to account for the height difference, while joining this section to the tall side of the brim stitches. Once the short rows go all the way around, you'll work in the round for the top part, with the rib forming a pleasing crown design.
It can be worn different ways—try it on with the brim seam over one ear or the other. It'll fit differently each way, but the brim seam will kind of cup the ear nicely both ways. My favorite way to wear it is with the seam over my right ear so that the wider side of the sideways rib kind of curves over the face.
**You need**
- Worsted–aran weight yarn, approx 130{150, 170, 190} yards / 120{140, 155, 175} meters
- Size US 7 / 4.5mm circular needles 32" or longer (or sized to get gauge)
- 4 stitch markers
- A crochet hook and scrap yarn for provisional cast-on
- An extra needle for a 3-needle bind-off
**Gauge**
19 sts and 26 rows per 4" / 10cm in 2x2 rib laying flat. Row gauge is more important than stitch gauge, but you don’t need to worry about matching gauge exactly—you can determine your hat size by measuring the first section. The pattern includes notes for measuring gauge and size as you knit so there's no need to make a gauge swatch!
Technique tutorials are included for the provisional cast-on and German short rows.
