Positive Space Cowls

Building on the ideas in the [Positive Space](pattern) hat, the Positive Space Cowls have a vibrant motif, accentuated by the switching of color dominance. The result is an eye-catching accessory, fun to knit and beautiful to wear! At first glance, a seasoned knitter may assume that this pattern uses double knitting. Rather than deploy that technique, I designed this pattern to use a provisional cast on and pretty purl bumps to create two seams. The result is a pattern that is approachable for all levels of knitters, yielding a finished piece that looks far more complicated than it is! This pattern offers instructions for two different cowls: a Double Wrapped version and a Pullover option. The sizes are as follows: *Double Wrapped Cowl:* 51” (130cm) circumference 5.5” (14cm) height *Pullover Cowl:* 20” (51cm) circumference 6.5” (17cm) height Malabrigo Sock yarn was an easy choice for this design. Each skein is 100% merino, soft as a kitten and a generous 440 yards (400 meters). I chose Impressionist Blue and Natural for my two samples and used Fucsia as a splash of color for the Pullover cowl. My gauge for this project was 33 sts and 36 rows / 4 in (10 cm). At this tension, I was able to produce the Double Wrapped Cowl with just one skein of each color, but had a scant amount remaining. To account for variations in gauge and yardage, I recommend two skeins of each color to make the Double Wrapped version. The Pullover Cowl only requires 50 grams of each color. Which means two skeins will yield both cowls!
