*Farraige* (pronounced farr-egg-uh) is Irish Gaelic for the ocean or the sea and this hat is definitely a twist on what was once a traditional Irish watchman’s cap! Using less than 1 skein or Aran or Worsted wool, this cap knits up in jig time and is a real joy to wear. Briggs and Little Heritage wool was chosen for the hat for many reasons. It’s very affordable, is from the oldest woolen mill in Canada and is located in my home province of New Brunswick. B&L has been used for generations to create garments for seafaring men and women because of its durability, warmth and how it naturally repels sea spray - perfect for this Farraige Watchman’s Cap. Colours used here were Seafoam and Navy Blue. This is a beginner friendly pattern with a rolled brim so only the knit stitch is used. Decreases are symmetrical creating appealing quadrants on the crown of the hat. A cute little embellishment can optionally be added using some beads and a few crochet chains to attach it to the crown. This hat is knit on 4mm circular needles and dpn’s are used to close the crown. The pattern is written for size S, M and L but can be easily made smaller or larger as explained in the pattern.
