Fiery Cross Fingerless Mitts

In the Outlander TV series, a Celtic cross made of twigs is constructed and then burned to call the men to battle; this is the Fiery Cross. These fingerless mitts are worked in Tunisian crochet-in-the-round using separate colors for the forward and return passes to create a colorwork fabric with no floats. A double-ended Tunisian crochet hook is needed for working Tunisian crochet-in-the-round. The ribbing is worked in straight Tunisian crochet. Since mitts get stretched when taking them on and off, I recommend a fingering weight yarn with approximately 20% nylon so that the mitts hold their shape: 160-170yds for the forward pass color and 80-90yds for the return pass color. Superwashed yarn is easier to work with when using small hook sizes. If a non-superwash yarn is used, I suggest reducing the hook size by about 0.25mm to match gauge.
