Outlander Thistle Fingerless Mitts

The national flower of Scotland is the Scottish Thistle. These fingerless mitts adorned with the Scottish Thistle aim to capture the feeling of Scotland in the first season of Outlander. These fingerless mitts are worked in Tunisian crochet-in-the-round using separate colors for the forward and return passes to create a colorwork fabric with no floats. A double-ended Tunisian crochet hook is needed for working Tunisian crochet-in-the-round. The ribbing is worked in straight Tunisian crochet. Since mitts get stretched when taking them on and off, I recommend a fingering weight yarn with approximately 20% nylon so that the mitts hold their shape: 160-170yds for the forward main color and 60-65yds for the ‘green’ return pass contrast color and 30-35yds for the ‘purple’ return pass contrast color. Superwashed yarn is easier to work with when using small hook sizes. If a non-superwash yarn is used, I suggest reducing the hook size by about 0.25mm to match gauge.
