Look at those buns, hun! This caked up monster can be made into a purse, drawstring bag, or into a squishy plush friend. And you can add a mouth pocket to any of these options! They can be made as-is or with pieces from my add-on packs. You can use any size yarn so you can make big giant monsters down to teeny tiny derpy friends! No matter the size though, they will probably eat you out of house and home.
Written in English and uses US terms. This pattern is intermediate level and completely no-sew (unless you sew on a bag strap). The arms, mouth, teeth, tongue, horns, and ears are all worked in as you crochet (as well as the liner bag if making a bag). This pattern has been tested by 6 amazing testers and there are lots of pictures and detailed instructions to help you make your monster buddy!
Supplies needed:
-Main yarn color for the body, arms, and optional ears. Yardage will vary depending on what size yarn you use but here is the yardage in a few different yarn sizes:
Medium yarn: 75 yards
Bulky yarn: 88 yards
Super Bulky yarn (plush): 145 yards
-Accent color yarns for mouth, teeth, and horns (all optional)
-Hook size compatible with your yarn (usually about 2 sizes smaller than suggested on label). I personally use 2.5mm with fine weight yarn, 3.5mm with medium, 4.5mm-5mm with bulky, and 6.5mm-7mm for super bulky.
-Safety eyes
-Optional: Cutting pliers if you’d like to clip off the backs of the safety eyes (I like to do this for bags but it’s okay if you don’t)
-Stuffing material (I use a mix of upcycled fiberfill and yarn/fabric scraps)
-Tapestry needle
-Stitch markers
-Thick foam board or cardboard for flat feet
-Optional: D-rings and/or premade purse straps. There are also instructions to make a strap (with or without clip for D-ring).
-Optional: Magnets if you’d like those grabby hands to hold a cookie (or anything else)! I recommend neodymium as they’re quite strong but you may still need to stack several if you use small ones.
If making a monstrous bag: you will need a liner bag (this is necessary due to the stuffed areas of the bag). The liner size will depend on your bag size. You can make your own or use premade drawstring bags. I just remove the drawstrings for purses and mouth pockets. Here are some size guides:
Jumbo: 9x12"
Super bulky: 7x9" (mouth pocket: 5x7") (or you can make a crochet mouth)
Bulky: 5x7" (mouth pocket: 4x5" (or you can make a crochet mouth)
Medium: 3x4"
I personally make purses in jumbo or super bulky and drawstring bags in bulky
Here are a few examples of sizing (arm to arm and head to foot) based on different yarn sizes used:
-Bernat Blanket (super bulky plush), 7mm hook = 10" wide/tall
-Loops & Threads Charisma (bulky), 5mm hook = 7" wide/tall
-Caron (worsted), 4mm hook = 5" wide/tall
