The cardigan is worked from the top down. First the back section is worked back and forth to shape the slope of the shoulders with increases. Then stitches are picked up for each shoulder, then the front pieces are knit separately until they are joined with the back at the underarms to form the body, which is worked back and forth to the bottom ribbing. Then stitches are picked up to knit the button bands in double knitting. After this, stitches are picked up and knitted for the neckline, which are worked back and forth.
