This hat is knit in the round, casting on at the bottom edge. There are two options for the brim - corrugated or folded ribbing. The main section of the hat is knit in stranded colorwork, with 3 colours in some rows. Decreases shape the crown, with the final few stitches cinched with the yarn tail to close the top.
The name of this hat comes from the two main inspirations for the design – ‘peerie’ is the Shetland word for small and ‘peewit’ is another name for a Lapwing. The hat has been inspired by the incredible knitting that comes out of Shetland. I’m lucky enough to live and work in those islands, managing nature reserves, some of which are home to breeding Lapwing.

***Some helpful notes:***
**Three colours**
There are 13 rows in the main Lapwing chart that use three colours. Pay extra attention to your tension here to prevent it becoming too tight
**Floats**
There are long floats in this pattern. It’s up to you if you want to catch them (I don’t always). If you do, make sure you stagger the catching so it’s not in the same place in each round.
**Tick boxes**
⬚ There are tick boxes in the pattern to help you keep track of progress.
**Charts**
All charts are read from right to left, bottom to top.
**Carrying colours between rows**
Colours can be carried between rows. However due to the number of colours used, it may be easier to break a colour after you have finished using it for each section to minimise the number of yarn balls attached to the project.
I’d love to see your finished hats.
