Worked top-down in the round, the Arbroath socks feature a striking parallel zigzag pattern running down the leg and along the top of the foot. Known as ‘Arbroath marriage lines’, this pattern originally was used on fishermen’s ganseys. With a broken rib cuff, the Arbroath socks also have a slip-stitch heel flap, a gusset, and a grafted toe.
Skills required: Cast on, knit, purl, k2tog/ssk/p2tog decreases, slipping stitches, knitting in the round, knitting flat (for heel), pick up and knit stitches, Kitchener stitch.
Suitable for advanced beginner knitters, with some sock knitting experience.
SIZING
Adult sizes S(M,L)
Circumference of sock foot: 7(8,9)“/18(20.5,23)cm
Length of leg (adjustable): 5.25"/13.5cm all sizes
Foot length (adjustable): 8.5(9.5,10.25)“/22(24,26)cm
TENSION/GAUGE
4”/10cm = 32 sts and 42 rounds over stocking stitch on 2.5mm needles
YARN
You will need approximately 306(372,437)yds / 280(340,400)m of 4ply/fingering weight yarn.
I would suggest choosing a solid/tonal colour yarn, or one with subtle contrasting colours/speckles, to enable the zigzag stitch pattern to be effectively shown.
I used Colliston Yarns’ 75/25 4ply yarn in their ‘Smokie’ colourway (75% superwash merino/25%nylon; 437yds/400m per 100g).
NEDDLES AND NOTIONS
Set of 2.5mm (US 1.5) double pointed needles (or size to give correct tension)
3(8,8) stitch markers + 1 unique marker to show beginning of round
