Known as ‘Arbroath marriage lines’, this pattern originally was used on fishermen’s ganseys. With a broken rib cuff, the Arbroath socks also have a slip-stitch heel flap, a gusset, and a grafted toe. Skills required: Cast on, knit, purl, k2tog/ssk/p2tog decreases, slipping stitches, knitting in the round, knitting flat (for heel), pick up and knit stitches, Kitchener stitch. Suitable for advanced beginner knitters, with some sock knitting experience. I would suggest choosing a solid/tonal colour yarn, or one with subtle contrasting colours/speckles, to enable the zigzag stitch pattern to be effectively shown. I used Colliston Yarns’ 75/25 4ply yarn in their ‘Smokie’ colourway (75% superwash merino/25%nylon; 437yds/400m per 100g).
