The rights we have right now were all fought for in the past. Nothing was given; they were all earned. It is our duty to defend them and stand for what feels right. If not for us, then for future generations.
When it looks like hope has left the building, when the world is falling apart, and all we want to do is curl up on the couch and long for simpler times, I urge you not to give up. As knitters, we can’t give up. What we can do though, is pick up our needles and yarn and express ourselves through our craft.
Stand up for your beliefs and express your First Amendment rights. Do it with your needles and yarns, and fight to preserve the rights our ancestors fought and died for.
This pattern is a colorwork chart you can incorporate into any pattern. Also included are instructions for a basic cowl and 4 sizes. There are no finished sizes for the cowl, but instructions based on the yarn weight you choose. That’s freedom, y’all.

**Level = Adventurous beginner**
Notions used in this pattern: Casting on, knitting and purling, making one, basic colorwork, placing markers, decreasing, binding off.
**MATERIALS**
To work this chart or cowl, you will need 2 colors: 1 main color (MC) and one contrasting color (CC). The amount needed will depend on your project, but aim for at least 1 100g skein of the main color, and a 20g mini or partial skein of the contrasting color. For sizes 3 or 4, use 200g of MC and 50g of CC.
Other notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors.
**GAUGE & NEEDLES**
Exact gauge is not crucial, but make sure to select the right size for your project and yarn weight. Major discrepancies will result in a different yardage requirement and a different fit!
Needles: 2 circular needles 16” long in the sizes of your choice to yield the fabric you like with your yarn.
Choose a needle size that will give you the fabric you like with the yarn you’ve selected. You will need this needle (referred to as larger needle in the pattern) to work the charts, and another needle one size smaller (referred to as smaller needle in the pattern) to work the ribbing.
**This chart is a 55-stitch repeat.** Included are 3 different borders you can play with to create your own unique design: waves, flowers, and arrows.
For bulky/extra bulky yarn, choose size 1 or 2.
For worsted-weight or aran yarn, choose size 2 or 3.
For DK weight or heavy fingering yarn, choose size 3 or 4.
For laceweight yarn, or for a wider cowl you can wrap twice, choose size 4.
If the project looks too snug after you’ve worked the ribbing, rip it out and begin in a larger size!
Size 1 will work the chart only once. Size 2 works the chart twice. Size 3 repeats the chart 3 times, and size 4 will use 4 repeats. Use stitch markers to separate chart repeats and double-check your work after every repeat.
