Ash and Timber Hat

This pattern is part of a collaboration with the Up North Fiber Community and will be available on January 18th to the public. This pattern was born from a skein of hand-dyed Purls & Pines merino — a Northwoods yarn, dyed in Bemidji, MN. Rooted in the grit and grace of Northwoods logging heritage, Ash and Timber blends rugged structure with soft sculpture. A deep folded brim gives way to a waffle-textured body that is squishy, warm and reminiscent of vintage logging wear. Knitted at a dense stitch gauge, she’s built to last and to hold her shape. Unique paired decreases frame a bold front rib panel, creating subtle architectural lines and a slightly peaked crown like those of classic workwear caps —while the silhouette stays jaunty and unmistakably modern. It’s not the fastest knit on your needles but once finished, it will speed its way to the top of your favorite-to-wear and give knit list. **FINISHED MEASUREMENTS** Approximately 16 (17.75, 19.5)” / 40.5 (45, 49.5) cm circumference and 10.25 (11, 12)” / 26 (28, 30) cm tall (measurements are post-blocking and unstretched). **YARN** 1 (1, 1) Skein: Purls and Pines Yarn - DK weight (100% Superwashed Wool; 246 yd/ 225 m per 100 g). Shown in: Licorice (black, flecked subtly with grey). **OR substitute DK weight** 158 (175, 192) yds / 144 (160, 175) meters Note: These yarn amounts are estimates. Any changes that knitters make to gauge or the hat’s measurements will change the amount of yarn you’ll need. **GAUGE** 27 stitches and 38 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in the Broken Rib Stitch worked in the round on gauge needles, after blocking. **NEEDLES** US Size 3 / 3.25 mm circular, 16” / 40 cm length for the hat; double pointed needles for small circumference knitting or, alternatively, one longer circular needle for Magic Loop Knitting. *Always choose the needle size that you need in order to obtain the pattern’s gauge.
