**Inspired by Harry Nyquist’s work on sampling rates and aliasing, these socks use a double gusset to gradually shift the look of self-striping yarn.** The Nyquist Socks are worked **toe-up** in a simple 2x1 rib, beginning right at the toe. The **double gusset** ensures a comfortable, well-balanced fit. Mostly worked in the round with an **afterthought heel turn**, they are perfect for relaxed, travel, or social knitting, letting you enjoy easy rounds now and turn the heel later. The socks can be made to any length, from shorties to retro knee-highs, helping you make the most of your yarn. This pattern has been **test knit** and professionally **tech edited**. --- ## **Pattern Information** ## **Gauge** 36 stitches and 44 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in stockinette stitch. ## **Techniques** * Judy Magic Cast On * Picking up stitches * German Short Rows * Grafting Stitches * M1 knit and purl increases * Jeny Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off ## **Difficulty Level ** This pattern is designed for **advanced beginners** and **intermediate knitters**. You should be comfortable maintaining a simple rib motif and picking up stitches for an **afterthought heel turn**. Charts (with written instructions) guide motif placement during increases. Familiarity with German short rows is recommended. Video tutorials are provided for the **cast-on, bind-off, short rows, and grafting techniques**. ## **Sizing** These socks are designed with wide feet in mind and sport two extra stitches (∼0.5 cm / 1/4 inch) in the foot compared to the leg. Choose the size closest to your widest feature, aiming for 10% of negative ease in width. The foot and leg lengths are adjustable. For foot length, ease should range from 10% negative ease to no ease, depending on your fit preference. **Foot**: [56, 62, 68, 74, 80] sts / [15.6, 17.2, 18.9, 20.6, 22.2] cm / [6 1/4, 6 7/8, 7 1/2, 8 1/4, 8 7/8] inches **Leg**: [54, 60, 66, 72, 78] sts/ [15, 16.7, 18.3, 20, 21.7] cm / [6, 6 5/8, 7 3/8, 8, 8 5/8] inches ## **Materials** **100g (400 m)** of fingering-weight sock yarn is sufficient for all sizes. For the knee-high version, plan for 150–200 g depending on your size. The design was created with self-striping yarn in mind, but it works well with any yarn. If working the heel in contrasting yarn, **10g (40m)** is sufficient for all sizes. ## **Needles** **2.25 mm / US 1** needles for the sock body or the needle size needed to achieve gauge. The pattern is written to be needle-agnostic. Use your preferred method to knit small circumferences, but note that if you are using small circulars, you will need another method to start the toe. ## **Notions** - Tapestry needle - Stitch markers - Scrap yarn [1]: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fresnel-socks
