The string of diamonds pattern on these mitts remined me of the isles of Orkney looking like diamonds in the North Sea above mainland Scotland. The principal town of Orkney is Kirkwall, meaning church wall. This pattern is worked in Tunisian crochet in the round and is a great use for yarn minis.
In this pattern, different sizes are created by changing gauge. Two sizes are gauged for a finished mitt hand circumference of: Small-Medium (8 ¼”) and Medium-Large (9”). A 3mm hook generally works for the smaller size and a 3.25mm for the larger size.
These mitts work up well in superwash yarn that contains 20-25% nylon to keep the mitts from stretching. If using a none superwash yarn, you may find you need to reduce the hook size slightly (0.25mm) to match gauge.
Color 1 requires 80-90 yards of fingering weight/sock yarn. The contrast color requires 80-90 yards. The ribbing color requires 90-100 yards.
This pattern is also available in an eBook containing eight colorwork fingerless mitt patterns for the price of five. Coorie: Tunisian Crochet Fingerless Mitts
