Brixham Mitts

The Brixham Mitts is one of seven patterns in issue five of John Arbon Textiles’ in house magazine, The Annual, published in September 2025. [There are kits available for this pattern.][1] These cosy crochet mittens are a nod to glorious seaside walks. Those deceptive days that are full of sunshine but with a sneaky sea breeze requiring a pair of squishy, hand-warming mittens ready and waiting in your pockets. These mitts can be made as either full mittens or fingerless mitts in any 4ply yarn. We've used Harvest Hues, Exmoor Sock, Devonia and Devon Naturals. With a simple three-colour wave pattern, the choice is yours – reflect nature, go with bright seaside deck chair colours, or even shades of beach glass. **Yarn** 4ply (Open and Closed Versions) MC 30 (50, 65, 80)g CC1 20 (30, 40, 50)g CC2 20 (30, 40, 50)g **Sizes** 1 (2, 3, 4) **Finished Measurements** a - Mitt circumference: 16 (19, 22.5, 25.5)cm / 6.25 (7.5, 8.75, 10)” b - Total mitt length (Open Version): 14.5 (18.5, 21, 24)cm / 5.75 (7.25, 8.25, 9.5)" c - Total mitt length (Closed Version): 17.5 (22, 26.5, 30)cm / 7 (8.75, 10.5, 11.75)” Use the mitt circumference to determine which size to make. Waistcoat stitch is quite dense, so choose the size closest to your required hand circumference with a little positive ease. Measuring hand circumference: place a measuring tape around the palm and knuckles of the hand. Clench the fist so that the tape measure is held under the fingertips (fingertips and thumb should not be part of the circumference being measured). **Gauge** Double slip stitch ribbing with smaller hook: 9.5 sts = 2.5cm / 1”; 28 rows = 10cm / 4” Colourwork waistcoat stitch with larger hook: 16 sts = 6.5cm / 2.5”; 16 rnds = 5cm / 2” The hand is worked in a continuous spiral, creating a diagonal slant in the fabric which pulls back to vertical with wet blocking.
