Wriley Shawl

It is made with a special kind of reversible cable. Reversible cables are normally worked on an underlying rib. If you put reversible cables on a underlying checkerboard, you create patterns that look neither like cables nor checkerboards. Instead they look like a wavy checkerboard with a corded feeling along the lines of the cables. You can get a sense for this corded feeling in the backlit detail photo. The cable pattern in Wriley undulates with short, medium, and longer waves using a stitch pattern adapted from the Wave Cable in *Reversible Knitting*. The variations are created by changing the row repeats of the checkerboard, making the checks different heights. The sample was worked with Ito Kinu silk noil held with Ito Sensai silk mohair. The combination is a lightweight and beautiful mix of structure and softness. The shawl takes three cones of Kinu and five balls of Sensai. The sample is shown in the color Angora for both strands. 1300 yards of each yarn is recommended, 2600 yards total. The pattern is easy to work, but you have to track your rows carefully as the row repeats are constantly changing to create the undulating waves.
