This sailor-inspired sweater is classic and timeless, with nautical stripes and a beautiful button band detail at one shoulder (optional). The Mariner features a bottom-up construction in the round, then the sleeves are picked up and shaped in a hybrid set-in/modified drop technique. Armholes are worked with stunning “fully fashioned” cable decreases reminiscent of luxury sweaters.
This piece also features a generous crew neck and an oversized fit, with oversized ease in the body and the sleeves. It has a slightly more streamlined fit in the upper torso and shoulder. Choose a size as directed, or size down one size for a more traditional relaxed fit. View A includes the button closure on the left shoulder, while View B does not.

Select size based on the intended wearer’s actual upper chest measurement. Due to the generous ease of this pattern, you can safely size down for a less oversized look, aiming for 4”-10” ease at full bust. If you are between sizes based on upper bust, size down.

I recommend a non-superwash, DK weight yarn that achieves gauge and has crimp and recovery, as this is an oversized garment and needs structure. I used De Rerum Natura’s Pénélope (90% organic Merinos d’Arles and 10% mulberry silk, 145 yds / 133 m / 50 g / 1.75 oz).
MC: 8 (9, 9, 10) (11, 11, 12) (13, 14, 14) balls of [Pénélope][3] in Crème.
CC: 2 balls of Pénélope in Belle Etoile.
