I've had many requests over the years for insights on how to cardigan-ize Stepaside, and instead of putting out basically the same cardigan-ized pattern, I just had to do one inspired by Botwood and give it its own voice and its own flair using the Stepaside construction.* Botwood is a top‐down, open‐front dolman cardigan using the Stepaside construction. The upper back is worked first with short rows to shape the shoulders. The shoulder colourwork bands are worked in the round with a steek, then stockinette is continued down with short rows to shape the shoulders at the front. The large miter colorwork bands are worked on each half with a steek at the cuff and a steek at the hem. The underarm of each sleeve is worked, then the lower body is worked down to start of hem. In the end, the hem is worked, then the neckband, then the cuffs -- then the hidden set-in pockets ♡ **Sizes** 1(2,3,4)(5,6) with finished bust circumferences: 91(108,124.5,141.5)(158,175)cm / 36(42.5,49,55.75)(62.25,69)”. and hem circumferences: 90.5(105.5,121,136)(151.5,166.5)cm / 35.75(41.5,47.75,53.5)(59.5,65.5)”. Intended to be worn with 15 to 30cm / 6 to 12” positive ease at bust and hem. Sample shown is the size 3 on 87cm / 34.25” bust and 99cm / 39” hips, corresponding to 37.5cm / 14.75” of ease at bust and 22cm / 8.75” ease at hips. A list of measurements is provided on page 3. **Yarn** Fleece & Harmony Selkirk Worsted (100% Canadian Wool; 183 metres / 200 yards in 80 grams) in 1 main colour (MC: A Night Without Stars) and 1 contrast colour CC (November Sky). If using the sample yarn, the number and colour of 80 gram skeins of Selkirk Worsted is given in brackets. MC (A Night Without Stars; 6(7,7,8)(8,9) skeins): 1075(1190,1275,1390)(1460,1580) metres / 1175(1300,1395,1520)(1595,1730) yards CC (November Sky; 2 skeins): 250(260,270,285)(290,295) metres / 275(285,295,310)(320,325) yards **Gauges** To find your needle sizes you need to swatch. Stockinette: 19 sts / 27 rows to 10cm / 4” using size A needles. Stranded Colourwork: 19 sts / 23 rnds to 10cm / 4” using size B needles. Woven Stitch (hem): 21 sts / 34 rows to 10cm / 4” using size A needles. **Needles and Notions** The gauges were achieved with the following needles. To work the pattern as written, you must swatch and use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking. If you do not know whether your stockinette gauge tends to be different than your colourwork gauge, I suggest making a single colour swatch in addition to your colourwork swatch to compare gauges. If it is different, then you need to go down one to two needle sizes for the single colour rounds and the pattern is written as such. Size A: 4.5mm (US 7) needles of varying lengths Size B: 5mm (US 8) needles of varying lengths You will also need: spare needles or interchangeable cables for holding sts; stitch markers; removable markers or scrap yarn; 3.5mm to 4mm (US E4 to US G6) crochet hook for surface crochet; crochet hook, tapestry/darning needle with sturdy sock yarn, sewing machine, or felting tools for reinforcing steeks. *********************************************** Tech edited by Sue Hislop (Ravelry: [Sue-Cat](/people/Sue-Cat))
