I could not resist creating some not so spooky and easy-to-knit skull socks. Using some white yarn with tiny speckles of vibrant colors, I was also inspired by the Mexican celebration Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This is a joyful celebration to remember passed loved ones. Celebrated from midnight on November 1 until November 2, it is common to offer festive-colored sugar skulls to represent a departed loved one. The skulls are whimsical, bright and colorful! These socks are knit from the top down in just two colors. Starting with a twisted ribbed cuff, this pattern has a fun and easy-to-knit (maybe not-sospooky) skull motif that is repeated throughout the leg and foot. There is a short row heel, so the colorwork pattern can be knit without disruption along the foot. Stitches are decreased for the toe and then grafted together. Sizing 1 (2, 3) To fit (foot circumference): 8 (9½, 10¾) inches / 19–21 (22.5–24.5, 26–28) cm Finished circumference: 7 (8½, 9¾) inches / 17.5 (21, 25) cm Yarn MC and CC: Fingering weight, PRU Yarns SOUL (85% superwash merino wool, 15% nylon), 437 yds (400 m) per 100-g skein Shown in MC: Spilled Oil (1 skein) 50g CC: Treat (1 skein) 50g Gauge 34 sts x 44 rnds = 4 inches (10 cm) for ribbing and stockinette. 34 sts x 38 rnds = 4 inches (10 cm) for colorwork. This pattern is included in Joyful Colorwork Socks: 25 New Knitting Patterns for Fun & Whimsical Footwear Featuring Pets, Games, Food, Hobbies & More which was published in November 2024. Available as a book or ebook from most book stores.
