Improved Hexagon Jacket

This baby jacket is a new and improved take on the hexagon sweater. If you make a granny square with two extra corners, it is a hexagon made entirely of right angles. Folded in half, it makes an L shape, which is, conveniently, approximately the same shape as half a sweater. If you make two of these hexagons, you can sew them together to make a short, boxy sweater. Unfortunately, that concept includes no neck shaping, no sleeve shaping, and sleeves that are on the short side. This pattern actually uses two heptagons, not hexagons, since adding an additional side creates neck shaping. I’ve added shaping on the undersides of the sleeves, and I’ve also varied what stitches are used on the tops of the sleeves to keep them from becoming too baggy. The pattern is made in worsted weight yarn, giving a drape closer to a jacket than a sweater, but making for quick work. Instructions are included for newborn, three month, and six month sizes, although you can increase the sizes a little bit by working at 3.5 stitches per inch, rather than four.
