The look of stranded two-color knitting (also known as Fair Isle) can be replicated in crochet with the Waistcoat stitch.
Enjoy making this lovely winter hat in crochet with this technique and your choice of contrasting colors!
**Hat Sizes:**
To fit a child, (adult, XL adult):
Hat Circumference: 16" (20", 24") to fit a 15-18", (19-21", 22-25") head.
Hat Height: 7" (8.5", 8.5")
**Yarn:**
Malabrigo Rios (100% SW merino; 210 yd./100 g)
Asylum Fibers Sparkle DK (75% SW Merino, 20% Nylon, 5% Silver Stellina; 231 yd./100 g) or other heavy dk or light worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors.
**Yarn Usage:** approximately 45 (60, 70) grams/
96 (126, 148) yards of each color.
**Gauge:**
16 sts and 20 rows over 4" in waistcoat st pattern, with larger hook. Note that superwash yarns may grow with blocking, but fabric made in waistcoat stitch will not have much stretch. *Meeting gauge is important for a well fitting hat.*
**Suggested Hooks:**
4 and 5 mm hook or size needed to achieve gauge.
The brim is worked flat, seamed, and then waistcoat stitches are worked, following a chart, in continuous rounds with the chart.
Video Tutorials are included with this pattern to learn and practice, if you've never done the waistcoat stitch before!
