Garnett

Garnett is a lightweight, floaty, diaphanous top with a softly curving neckline and deep dropped shoulders, perfect worn by itself or with a vest when the temperatures warm up. It is also a wonderful layering piece when worn over a long sleeve top. Garnett is s worked with large needles and two fine yarns held together, creating a delightful open texture. A lace panel is worked up the front and on both sleeves. The top is knit from the bottom up, first in the round and then the front and back separately, with sleeves picked up and knitted downwards. Garnett was inspired by the artisan and businesswoman, Annie Garnett, who was born and lived in the Lake District for her entire life. Born in 1864, Annie ran her successful business, The Spinnery, for many years, creating experimental fabrics which were some of the first to have metals woven through them. She employed over 90 women to work from their homes spinning yarn, even providing them with spinning wheels free of charge for this purpose. Annie was also a hand-dyer, who used her own dye garden as a starting point for many of the beautiful colours she used in her woven textiles. Garnett is knitted with two strands of different fibres to mimic, in a simple way, these innovative techniques. I have used Susan Crawford Fenella, my vintage 3-ply weight yarn, spun from 100% British wool and hand-dyed at our own Lake District dye studio, in a wide range of vintage inspired shades. paired with our new companion yarn, Luca-S Soft Kid Silk, a mohair/silk blend which provides us with a multitude of shades to pair with our Fenella yarn. Garnett is shown here in two colour ways. Colourway One uses shades: Columbine (Fenella) and Rose (Luca-S). Colourway two uses shades: Rannoch (Fenella) and Tangerine (09) (Luca-S). Garnett is shown in colourway one modelled by Susan wearing the 4th size to fit 102–107cm (40–42in) chest, and in colourway two modelled by Charlie wearing the 3rd size to fit 92–97cm (36–38in) chest.
