I used some leftover 4 ply cotton and a no. 3 hook, but I think it can be done with any yarn and hook, provided you get the right weight/hook combination. errata: the ends of the cords in the written pattern are made in dc's, and the ones in the picture in treble (triple) crochets, therefore, they look (and are) bigger.
