**ABOUT**
The Woodward Scarf uses a gradient yarn, Lion Brand Scarfie, to create a beautifully soft striping pattern throughout this design. Although this is a classically shaped rectangular scarf, in this pattern you will crochet on a diagonal (this is also called “on the bias”), beginning in one corner and ending in the opposite corner for a unique take on a basic scarf!

**MATERIALS**
**Yarn:** Light Bulky/Heavy Worsted—[Lion Brand Scarfie][2] in Cream/Silver
* 78% acrylic, 22% wool
* 312 yds (285 m) per 5.3 oz (150 g) skein
* Find this yarn on [lionbrand.com][3] or visit [yarnsub.com][4] to find comparable substitutes.
**Yardage Required:** 3 skeins of [Lion Brand Scarfie][5] or 850 yds (778 m)
Substitute [Lion Brand Scarfie][6] with any similar category 5 (bulky) weight yarn or category 4 (worsted) medium weight yarn that matches gauge. Note that this yarn is labeled a “bulky” but feels a lot like a worsted. You can also easily substitute any other yarn weight with a corresponding hook and work to your desired dimensions.
**Hook:** Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
**Notions:** Tapestry needle
**MEASUREMENTS**
Finished scarf should measure approximately 15.5” (39 cm) in depth and 80” (203 cm) in length.
**PATTERN NOTES**
**Skill Level:** Beginner
**Stitch Counts:** Stitch counts are listed after each row. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row.
**Reversible:** There is no right side or wrong side; both sides are identical. Whichever side you choose to wear as the “right side” is your preference.
**Turning Chain:** The turning chain does not count as a stitch. The turning chain will sometimes be a ch-2 and sometimes a ch-3, depending on which edge you are working from. This is intentional to help give the scarf additional stretch on the decrease edge.
**Construction:** You will begin in one corner with four stitches and increase in the first and last stitch of every row using two different increase rates to create a right triangle. Once you have reached the desired scarf width, you will then begin working straight up to build the length of your scarf by increasing on one edge while decreasing the same number of stitches on the other in order to maintain the same number of stitches in each row. Once you have reached your desired scarf length, you will work a set of decreases to match the increases.
