Liana Socks

The Liana Socks are inspired by the climbing woody plant from our precious tropical forests. Imagine the Liana plant climbing and swirling around trees in a rainforest providing valuable habitat for animals and insects in the forest canopy. After a short cuff, the pattern starts with ribbing on these top-down socks. A slip-stitch heel flap and traditional gusset are used. The Liana pattern is worked on the instep, while the sole is knit in Stockinette Stitch. The Liana pattern has quite a lot of stretch and is meant to be worn with approx 1.5–2" negative ease. The pattern looks best if the ease is not too large, so consider going up a size rather than making a smaller size with more negative ease. For the largest size, consider buying an extra hank of yarn, as there will be hardly any leftover yarn. Instructions are given for Magic Loop or two circular needles technique, but can be easily adjusted to DPNs by dividing stitches on each needle across two DPNs. All rnds begin with front leg/instep (Needle 1), followed by back leg back/gusset/sole (Needle 2). A smaller needle size is used for cuff, heel, and toe. This adds durability to the heel and toe, and a nice transition from cuff to Liana pattern on leg. Chart is worked in the round; read each chart row from right to left as a RS row.
