Wool Vessel

This is a bit of a weird departure—it’s a basket/pot/vessel, and instead of being a pure knitting project, it’s knit and then fulled/felted to create a dense fabric which holds its shape. The result is a rustic tote: earthy, attractive, and relatively sustainable. Baskets from your stash > buying something new and plastic, right? (I’m seriously pretty stoked about these. I made a second sample because I liked the first. These are a little like the [Wool Market Bag][1]; I ended up fulling both of those and now use them to store potatoes. It’s great.) Use 100% wool, the less processed the better (probably); the samples are shown in Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool in Oak Tweed and Oatmeal. Finishing was achieved by running the finished knit pieces through a front-load washing machine on hot settings. It’s also possible to do this a second time or send the wool through a dryer cycle for a stiffer fabric, though this will make the finished vessel smaller. **Materials:** -375-465 yards of feltable wool, or one skein of Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool, any color. (Samples are in Oatmeal and Oak Tweed.) -1 set of 5 DPNs and 1 16” circular needle in US7/4.5mm, or size needed for gauge. -8 removable stitch markers (optional) -One crochet hook, in size suited to yarn - Tapestry needle **Gauge:** Gauge of the unfinished fabric is 16 sts and 28 rows over 4”/10cm of garter stitch, worked in the round, unblocked.
